The evolution of an idea in 1963 led to the creation of the Department of Management Studies. The idea that was initially a seed became a reality and IIT Delhi established an internal committee in 1974 to review the operation of the management section. In 1975, an expert panel was established to examine the possibility of this area being launched in a more sustained manner. In 1975, the School for System Studies established a Master of Technology program in Management Systems. The School for Systems and Management Studies was renamed School for Systems and Management Studies. 1978 saw the establishment of the Management Core Group.
