According to the UPES Act, 2003 passed by the State Legislature of Uttarakhand in 2003, the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) was established. Since the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) was established, it has focused on developing courses for the growing industries in the energy sector such as mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, cloud computing, civil engineering, mechatronics engineering, big data analytics, machine design engineering, computer science, petroleum, graphic and gaming, etc.

The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies offers full-time UG and PG courses as well as PhD programs. The University also offers part-time Ph.D. programs. UPES admission is broken down into two types: Examination pathway and non-examination pathway. The Examination pathway refers to candidates who take UPES Entrance Exams. For the Non-Examination pathway, applicants are admitted on a Merit basis (or score in the National Level Entrance Examination). The university also offers distance learning.
UPES admission to B.Tech (Hons.) and B.Tech–LLB (Hons.). Integral courses are offered on the basis of a performance in UPESEAT and central counselling. Candidates may also apply if they have a valid score from JEE Main in non-examination categories.
Admissions to B.Des are based on the UPES score, JEE Mains or UCEED scores or NATA scores. After that, Portfolio Presentation and Interview will be done. Last date to apply is July 31, 2022.

The application form can be filled out online for all UG & PG courses offered by UPES. Students are advised to follow the below-listed steps to apply for the courses offered by UPES: Online Application:
- Visit the official website of UPES and click on the ‘UPES Admission’ tab on the menu bar.
- Click on ‘Online Application Form’ from the drop-down menu.
- Click on your status whether Indian Resident or Foreign Resident.
